Where the town is on Lake Garda
Gardone lies on the western shore of Lake Garda in the Province of Brescia, Lombardy. It sits immediately north of Salò and south of Toscolano Maderno.
The location works particularly well for exploring the Riviera dei Limoni and the western side of the lake. Salò is the nearest larger town, while Gargnano and Limone sul Garda are farther north.
Gardone does not have a railway station. Travellers arriving by train usually continue from Brescia or Desenzano del Garda by bus, taxi or a combination of bus and seasonal boat services.

The Vittoriale is not simply a house museum. It is a monumental complex of gardens, buildings, museums, squares, waterways and military objects created by writer Gabriele d’Annunzio with architect Gian Carlo Maroni.
The hillside park contains the bow of the Puglia warship, the MAS 96 motorboat, an aircraft associated with d’Annunzio’s flight over Vienna, an amphitheatre and his mausoleum. The unusual combination of landscape, personal symbolism and military imagery makes the site unlike any other villa on Lake Garda.
Allow enough time for the grounds. The complex covers approximately 9 hectares and includes slopes, outdoor paths and numerous points of interest.
The Prioria was d’Annunzio’s final home and contains densely decorated rooms filled with books, artworks and personal objects. Entry is only possible on an official guided visit. Tours are timed, places are limited and advance booking is strongly recommended.

The Giardino Botanico Fondazione André Heller combines rare plants, water features and contemporary sculpture within a steep garden above the lakefront.

Begin around Piazza Wimmer and the lakefront. The nearby Grand Hotel Gardone dates from the town’s early resort era and remains one of its defining buildings.
Continue along the Promenade Paul Heyse. The route passes historic gardens, the Evangelical Church, the former municipal casino and views of Villa Alba. The villa’s neoclassical façade was inspired by ancient Greek architecture and is best appreciated from outside unless a specific event provides access.
Torre San Marco stands beside the lake nearby. It is associated with d’Annunzio but now operates mainly as an event venue, so it should not be assumed to offer regular sightseeing access.

Explore Gardone Sopra
Gardone Sopra is the older, elevated part of the settlement surrounding the Vittoriale area. Its stairways, stone passages, small courtyards and houses feel very different from the grand hotels below.
The upper village is worth exploring after the Vittoriale, when you are already above the lake. Walking uphill only to see the village would be less efficient.
This is also where the two personalities of the town become clear. Gardone Sotto is outward-looking and shaped by the waterfront, while Gardone Sopra feels enclosed, residential and closely connected to d’Annunzio’s complex.

Choose the right beach
Gardone is suitable for summer swimming, but it is not a sandy-beach resort. Expect pebbles, stones, lake platforms and organised lidos.

The biggest mistake is moving repeatedly between the lakefront and Gardone Sopra. The elevation change looks modest on a map but becomes tiring in warm weather.

The Heller Garden and Vittoriale should not be treated as quick adjacent stops. Both involve walking, and the Vittoriale alone can occupy several hours.

By car
The town is reached along the SS45bis Gardesana Occidentale. This road follows the western side of Lake Garda and can become congested around Salò, Gardone and Toscolano Maderno during busy summer periods.
A car is useful for flexible exploration, but it is not useful inside the compact centre. Park once and walk whenever the terrain allows.
Parking and restricted streets
