Lerici, Italy: Things to Do, Beaches and Where to Stay

Lerici, Italy, curves around a harbour beneath Castello San Giorgio on Liguria’s Gulf of Poets. A seafront promenade connects the historic centre with the beaches of Venere Azzurra and San Terenzo, making it easy to combine sightseeing with time by the water.

Beyond the main bay, Fiascherino offers small beach coves, while Tellaro has narrow lanes and a pink church overlooking the sea. Both belong to the wider municipality but require a separate outing rather than a continuation of the flat waterfront walk.

Lerici has no railway station. It works well for a beach-focused stay with occasional excursions, but La Spezia is more convenient if visiting Cinque Terre by train is the main purpose of the trip.

Lerici - Liguria - Italy

Quick Planning Answer

  • Best for: beaches, waterfront evenings, couples, families and a relaxed Gulf of Poets base
  • Time needed: one day for Lerici and San Terenzo; two or three nights for beaches, Tellaro and a boat trip
  • Best general period: May, June and September for a balance of beach weather and easier logistics
  • Car or no car: a car is unnecessary in the centre and can be inconvenient during the summer ZTL period
  • Best first-time base: Lerici centre for restaurants, boats and evening atmosphere
  • Best family base: San Terenzo or Venere Azzurra for easier beach access
  • Best couples’ base: Lerici harbour, Fiascherino or Tellaro
  • Main planning issue: Lerici, San Terenzo and Tellaro are distinct places, and not every beach is reached from the same parking area or bus stop

Understanding Lerici, San Terenzo and Tellaro

Lerici occupies the eastern side of the Gulf of La Spezia, usually called the Gulf of Poets. The central town curves around its harbour beneath Castello San Giorgio. Behind the waterfront, narrow caruggi climb between colourful houses, small squares and local shops.

San Terenzo lies along the coast to the northwest. A paved seafront route connects the two towns through the Venere Azzurra beach area, making this the easiest part of the municipality to explore without transport.

Fiascherino and Tellaro lie southeast of Lerici, beyond a more rugged section of coast. Fiascherino is primarily a beach and accommodation area, while Tellaro is a compact village built against a rocky headland. They are reached by local road, bus, taxi or hill paths rather than by continuing along the flat Lerici–San Terenzo promenade.

This geography should determine where you stay. Lerici and San Terenzo are more practical for first-time visitors, while Fiascherino and Tellaro reward travellers who prefer coves and quieter evenings over easy transport connections.

Best Things to Do in Lerici

Explore the Harbour and Historic Lanes

Begin around Piazza Garibaldi and the waterfront. Fishing boats and leisure craft fill the sheltered harbour, while cafés and restaurants continue around the edge of the old centre.

The narrow streets behind the waterfront are more atmospheric than a checklist of individual monuments. Walk through the caruggi, look for the Oratorio di San Rocco and continue towards the Chiesa di San Francesco. Parts of the old town are steep, but the harbour itself is easy to explore.

The most rewarding time to return is early evening, when the beaches begin to empty and the waterfront becomes the focus of local life.

Visit Castello San Giorgio

Castello San Giorgio stands on the rocky promontory above the harbour and remains the town’s defining landmark. Its oldest surviving spaces date from the 13th century, while later fortification work adapted the castle to changing military needs. Major reinforcement completed in 1555 created the thick sloping outer walls visible from the waterfront.

Inside, the small Cappella di Santa Anastasia retains the striped black-and-white stonework associated with medieval Pisan and Genoese architecture. Other areas are used for exhibitions and cultural events, and the upper sections provide views across the Gulf of Poets.

The castle hosts changing art exhibitions alongside its historic spaces and panoramic terrace. Check the official castle visitor information for current opening times, admission details and temporary closures.

An elevator connects the Galleria San Giorgio near Calata Mazzini with the castle’s outdoor piazza. Check that it is operating before relying on it. It avoids much of the uphill approach, but the interior rooms require stairs.

Walk the Seafront to San Terenzo

The coastal walk from Lerici to San Terenzo is one of the easiest ways to understand the area. The route follows the water past Lido di Lerici and Venere Azzurra before reaching San Terenzo’s beach and historic centre.

This is not a demanding coastal hike. It works as a relaxed promenade with opportunities to stop for a swim, lunch or coffee. Families can combine the walk with beach time, while couples may prefer to make the return journey close to sunset.

San Terenzo has its own small castle at the end of the beach. Public access varies, but the exterior and coastal setting are worth seeing even when the interior is closed.

Discover the Shelley Connection

San Terenzo’s literary associations explain why the wider bay is known as the Gulf of Poets. Percy Bysshe Shelley and Mary Shelley lived at Casa Magni in 1822, and other writers and artists later spent time around the gulf.

Casa Magni is best appreciated as part of the waterfront setting rather than treated as a conventional museum visit. The Percy B. Shelley Literary Park connects San Terenzo with other locations associated with the poet, including Shelley Park and the Pietraia area near the Rocchetta headland.

The literary connection adds context to the coast, but it does not require a specialist itinerary. It fits naturally into a walk between the beach, San Terenzo Castle and the waterfront.

Spend Half a Day in Tellaro

Tellaro is part of the municipality of Lerici but feels like a separate destination. The village descends through narrow lanes to the pink Chiesa di San Giorgio, built directly beside the sea. Houses crowd around the rocky point, leaving little space for traffic or conventional sightseeing.

This is a place for a slow walk rather than a long attraction list. Explore the lanes, find the small harbour viewpoints and allow time to sit near the water. Tellaro is especially appealing to couples and photographers, but its steps and sloping streets are less suitable for visitors with limited mobility.

Do not drive into the restricted village centre. Use authorised parking outside the ZTL or arrive by local bus, then continue on foot.

See the Gulf from the Water

Boat travel reveals the geographical relationship between Lerici, Portovenere, the islands and the Cinque Terre coast. Seasonal public boats connect locations around the Gulf of Poets, while private and shared excursions depart from Lerici for swimming, sightseeing and sunset trips.

Check the official Navigazione Golfo dei Poeti timetables for sailings from Lerici on your travel dates, including the departure point and return connection. Services vary by season and can change with sea conditions, so confirm the day’s operation before setting out.

For a relaxed trip, choose a Gulf of Poets route towards Portovenere or the islands. Reaching Cinque Terre by boat creates a longer scenic day, but the bus-and-train route through La Spezia is a more dependable alternative when the sea service is not operating.

Walk the Monte Caprione Trails

Lerici belongs to the landscape of the Parco Naturale Regionale di Montemarcello-Magra-Vara. Trails climb through olive groves, woodland and hillside villages above the coast.

Marked circuits connect places including Lerici, La Serra, Tellaro, Fiascherino and San Terenzo. These paths are a better choice in spring and autumn than during the hottest part of a summer day. Surfaces can be steep, uneven or slippery after rain, so use proper footwear and check current trail conditions.

The Tellaro–Portesone–Barbazzano–Fiascherino circuit is particularly relevant for travellers staying on the eastern side of the municipality. Walkers based in Lerici can instead choose a shorter loop towards La Serra or the hills above Venere Azzurra.

Best Beaches in Lerici and Which One to Choose

Lerici has a more varied and accessible beach selection than many visitors expect from the eastern Ligurian coast. Some stretches are free, others are managed by beach clubs, and several combine both options.

Venere Azzurra for Convenience

Venere Azzurra lies between Lerici and San Terenzo. It is the most practical choice for visitors who want a straightforward beach day without committing to an isolated cove.

The beach has free sections and areas offering seasonal equipment rental. It is close to public parking and the coastal promenade, so you can combine swimming with visits to both towns.

Its convenience also makes it one of the busiest choices during summer. Arrive early if you need parking or intend to use the free section.

San Terenzo for Families

San Terenzo’s sandy beach runs directly beside the village. Free and serviced areas are available, with cafés and other facilities within easy walking distance.

This is one of the most convenient options for families because the beach, promenade and village are concentrated in one area. It also works well for travellers staying without a car.

Lido di Lerici for a Serviced Beach Day

Lido di Lerici is a managed beach close to the centre. The seabed descends gradually, making it suitable for visitors who prefer shallower water and organised facilities.

It is a practical choice when comfort matters more than finding a secluded setting. Confirm current admission arrangements and reserve in advance during the busiest summer periods.

Fiascherino for Cove Scenery

The two beaches at Fiascherino sit between Lerici and Tellaro, separated by a small rocky headland. They combine free and serviced sections, with seasonal rentals and food facilities.

Access involves small stairways from the road, and space is limited compared with Venere Azzurra. Fiascherino suits couples, swimmers and travellers staying nearby, but it is less convenient for anyone carrying extensive beach equipment or needing step-free access.

Baia Blu for a Separate Beach Excursion

Baia Blu lies near Pozzuolo, on the San Terenzo side of the municipality. The bay includes a free beach and a private beach establishment.

Treat it as a separate outing rather than another stop on the central promenade. Parking close to the bay is limited, and the approach differs from the main Lerici and Venere Azzurra parking plan.

Eco del Mare for an Upscale Experience

Eco del Mare occupies a small inlet between Lerici and Fiascherino. It is a private beach club rather than a public beach and is reached from the road above by stairs or an elevator.

The location suits travellers looking for a managed, higher-end beach day. Check current access arrangements and availability before travelling specifically for it.

A Realistic One-Day Lerici Itinerary

Start in central Lerici and walk around the harbour before exploring the lanes behind Piazza Garibaldi. Continue to Castello San Giorgio, using the elevator if it is operating or approaching through the historic streets.

After visiting the castle, return to the waterfront for lunch. In the afternoon, follow the promenade towards Venere Azzurra. Stop for a swim or continue to San Terenzo for its beach, waterfront and castle exterior.

Return to Lerici for the evening rather than trying to add Tellaro to the same day. If Tellaro is a priority, visit it instead of San Terenzo or add a second day.

Travellers arriving by car should park once and complete this route on foot. Moving the vehicle between central Lerici, Venere Azzurra and San Terenzo creates unnecessary parking and ZTL complications.

Lerici, Portovenere or Cinque Terre

Lerici is the strongest choice when beaches, relaxed evenings and a multi-night coastal base matter more than famous viewpoints. It has a wider range of family-friendly swimming options than Portovenere and feels less dominated by sightseeing than the Cinque Terre villages.

Portovenere offers a more dramatic concentration of monuments, including the Church of San Pietro, the Doria Castle and views towards Palmaria Island. Choose it for history, rocky scenery and a compact short stay.

Cinque Terre is better for train-based village hopping and famous coastal walks. Lerici can support a Cinque Terre day trip, particularly when boats are operating, but it is not the most efficient base for visiting the five villages on several consecutive days. La Spezia provides easier rail access.

Travellers who want one day in Cinque Terre and several slower beach days may find Lerici a good compromise. Those planning to focus almost entirely on Cinque Terre should stay closer to the railway.

Where to Stay in Lerici

Lerici Centre and Harbour

Central Lerici is the most convenient base for first-time visitors. Restaurants, boat departures, the castle and the waterfront are close together, while the harbour remains pleasant after many day visitors have left.

Parking can be difficult, and some lanes behind the harbour are steep. Travellers arriving without a car should prioritise accommodation near the waterfront, while drivers should confirm parking arrangements and ZTL access before travelling.

It is also convenient for travellers using buses from La Spezia. Evenings are generally quieter than around Lerici harbour, although the choice of late-night dining is more limited.

La Serra and the Hills Above the Coast

The hills suit travellers seeking elevated views, quieter nights and accommodation with more outdoor space or parking. They can also offer a different atmosphere from Lerici’s busy seafront.

A hill stay is less practical without a car, and walking back from the coast may involve a substantial climb. Confirm the approach road and parking arrangements before travelling, as selected roads and hillside settlements have access restrictions.

Getting to Lerici and Getting Around

By Train and Bus

Lerici does not have a railway station. The most useful arrival points are La Spezia Centrale and Sarzana, followed by an ATC bus.

La Spezia is usually the more convenient interchange for arrivals from Genoa or Cinque Terre, while Sarzana can suit journeys from Tuscany. Consult the official ATC bus timetables for your travel date and check the last return service before planning an evening out.

Once in the municipality, central Lerici, Venere Azzurra and San Terenzo are easy to combine on foot. Tellaro and Fiascherino require a local bus, taxi, car or a proper hillside walk.

By Car, ZTL and Parking

A car is useful for a wider Liguria and Tuscany road trip but inconvenient inside the main coastal centres. Lerici, San Terenzo and Tellaro have camera-controlled limited traffic zones, and several roads have permanent restrictions.

Seasonal ZTL controls normally become more extensive during summer. Electronic signs at the entry points indicate whether a controlled gate is active. Never follow another vehicle through an active entrance unless your registration is authorised. If staying inside a ZTL, ask your accommodation to confirm the permitted arrival route and vehicle authorisation before driving in; a reservation alone does not authorise entry.

La Vallata is the most useful large parking area for many visitors. It sits near Venere Azzurra, between Lerici and San Terenzo, and allows you to explore the coast without moving the car. Other parking areas serve central Lerici, San Terenzo, Tellaro and Baia Blu.

Free local shuttle routes connect principal parking areas, the coast and selected hillside settlements. Routes and operating periods change, so check the current map before relying on them.

By Air

Pisa International Airport is generally the more convenient airport for Lerici, especially when combining the trip with Tuscany. Genoa Airport is another option for a wider Ligurian itinerary.

From either airport, continue by train towards La Spezia or Sarzana and complete the journey by bus, taxi or rental car.

Best Time to Visit

May, June and September are the most balanced months for beach time, coastal walking and outdoor dining. Sea temperatures and conditions vary, but services are generally more active than in winter and parking pressure is usually lower than during the main August holiday period.

July and August offer the fullest beach and boat season. They also bring crowded coves, higher accommodation demand, more active traffic restrictions and greater pressure on parking. Reserve serviced beach spaces and boat trips in advance where possible.

Outside the main season, Lerici becomes quieter and works well for walking, food and relaxed weekends. Public boats and beach services are reduced, while some hospitality businesses operate shorter hours. Keep a bus-based or land-based alternative for any planned boat excursion.

Food to Try

Local menus reflect both Ligurian cooking and the fishing traditions of the Gulf of La Spezia. Look for pesto served with trofie or trenette, focaccia, farinata and vegetable pies.

Seafood is central to many harbour restaurants. Mussels are commonly called muscoli in the La Spezia area, and may appear stuffed, steamed or served with pasta. Anchovies, mixed fried seafood and local fish also feature regularly.

For a simple lunch, focaccia or farinata leaves more time for the beach. Reserve dinner during summer weekends, especially when you want a waterfront table.

FAQs

Is Lerici one of the Cinque Terre villages?

No. Lerici is on the eastern side of the Gulf of La Spezia, outside Cinque Terre. Seasonal boat connections make it possible to combine the two areas, but they are separate destinations.

Are Lerici Castle and La Spezia’s Castello San Giorgio the same place?

No. Both castles share the name San Giorgio. Lerici’s castle stands above its harbour, while the castle in La Spezia houses the city’s archaeological museum. Check the town name when looking up directions or visitor information.

Was Frankenstein written in San Terenzo?

No. Frankenstein was first published in 1818, before Mary and Percy Bysshe Shelley stayed at Casa Magni in San Terenzo in 1822. The house is associated with their later life in Italy, not the novel’s original creation.

Is Lerici Right for Your Liguria Trip?

For a short stay, spend one day exploring Lerici and San Terenzo, then leave another day flexible for Tellaro, a boat excursion or a hillside walk. Choose according to the weather rather than trying to combine every experience in one day.
